Joost van den Vondel (1587 – 1679) was a Dutch author, poet and playwright. The most prominent Dutch poet and playwright of the 17th century, he is considered the national poet of the Netherlands. His play Gijsbrecht van Aemstel (1637) was performed annually on New Year's Day from 1637 to 1968, and remains one of the Netherlands most famed plays.

F. Bordewijk

Ferdinand Bordewijk was born in Amsterdam and studied law in Leiden. After graduation he worked at a Rotterdam law firm.

His first published work was a volume of poetry titled Paddestoelen ("Mushrooms") under the pen-name Ton Ven. It was not particularly well received.

His breakthrough came with the short novels Blokken ("Blocks", 1931), Knorrende Beesten ("Growling Animals", 1933) and Bint (1934), and two longer works Rood paleis ("Red Palace", 1936) and Karakter ("Character", 1938).

His style, which is terse and symbolic, is considered magic realism. He was awarded the P.C. Hooftprijs in 1953 and the Constantijn Huygens award in 1957.

Nijhoff werd in 1894 in Den Haag geboren als zoon van de uitgever Wouter Nijhoff en Johanna Alida Seijn. Egon Hostovský

Egon Hostowsky (sometimes spelled "Hostovsky") was a major figure in Czech literature from the 1930s to the '60s. The youngest of eight children, he was born into a Jewish family in 1908 in the Bohemian village of Hronov. (His father was part owner of a small textile plant.) Hostowsky studied in Prague and later in Vienna, and became an editor at the Prague-based publishing company Melantrich in the early '30s. He also wrote his own books, including the novels Lost Shadow (1931) and The Arsonist (1935), for which he later received the Czechoslovak State Prize for Literature. He left Czechoslovakia in 1939, ostensibly to deliver a lecture in Brussels. Instead, he went to Paris and then New York, seeking a home far from the occupying Germans.

Judith Herzberg

Judith Herzberg debuteerde in 1961 met haar eerste gedichten in Vrij Nederland. In 1963 verscheen haar eerste bundel, Zeepost. Hierna volgden onder meer Beemdgras (1968), Strijklicht (1971) en Zoals (1992).

Vanaf het begin van de jaren zeventig volgden toneel- en tv-stukken, filmscripts en teksten voor musicals. Herzberg schreef onder andere het scenario voor Charlotte, een film van Frans Weisz over het leven van de in Auschwitz vermoorde schilderes Charlotte Salomon.

Isabel Hoving was born in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. She began her career as a secondary school teacher, during which time she became very active in the Dutch women's movement.

She eventually gave up her job to study literary theory full-time, and spent some months in Senegal, West Africa for a research project.

Hermine Heijermans

Hermine Marie Leendert Heijermans (1902-1983) was a Dutch stage actress, author and politician. She was the daughter of playwright Herman Heijermans and, under the name Minny Heijermans, performed in her father's company, the Tooneelvereeniging, from 1921 to 1938. After the Second World War she remained active as a comedian. Heijermans is best remembered as an author: she wrote several novels and a biography about her father. In 1976 she edited the ‘Boekenweekgeschenk’ titled “Snikken en smartlapjes”. In the 1960s and ’70s she was a columnist for Sekstant, the magazine of the NVSH.
