Sally Andrew

Eleanor Baker

Although Baker initially studied music, she obtained her M.A. in Afrikaans (cum laude) in 1968 at the University of Pretoria. In Johannesburg she worked as a school teacher and got married to Walter Baker in 1969. Three years later her debut Wêreld sonder einde appeared, albeit that Weerkaatsings (Reflections) established her status as an important (though unfortunately often undervalued) Afrikaans author who penned 56 books in the end. François Alwyn Venter was born in Hopetown on 27 November 1916. He attended school at Vioolskraal, Strydenburg and Hopetown, and matriculated in 1934. Etienne Roché van Heerden grew up in a dual medium household. After matriculating he decided to join the navy, but since he is blind in the right eye, was not called up for combat duty. Instead he served as a dog handler, playing his alsatian at major festivals.
