Dana Snyman

Dana Snyman is an award-winning South African journalist, writer and playwright.

Snyman was born in Stellenbosch and matriculated from Nylstroom High School. He later followed a journalism course at the Pretoria Technikon before joining the Afrikaans newspaper Beeld as a crime reporter.

Three years later he became a journalist at Huisgenoot magazine, where he worked for ten years. As of 2007, Snyman is the travel editor of Weg! magazine.

His first book, Uit die binneland (From the interior) was published in 2005 and his second, Anderkant die scrap (The other side of the scrap), in 2006. Both are collected short-short stories and schetches.

Eleanor Baker

Although Baker initially studied music, she obtained her M.A. in Afrikaans (cum laude) in 1968 at the University of Pretoria. In Johannesburg she worked as a school teacher and got married to Walter Baker in 1969. Three years later her debut Wêreld sonder einde appeared, albeit that Weerkaatsings (Reflections) established her status as an important (though unfortunately often undervalued) Afrikaans author who penned 56 books in the end. Since her husband was in the diplomatic service, the couple moved from Teheran to Den Haag and from there to Montreal and Brussels before returning to South Africa to retire. Baker died of cancer at the age of 57.

Christiaan Bakkes

Christiaan Mathys Bakkes was born on August 3 1965 in Vredenburg on the West Coast. He matriculated in 1983 at the Pro Arte Art School in Pretoria.

Christiaan was a game ranger in the Kruger National Park when he lost his left arm in February 1994 after two crocodiles attacked him while he was swimming in a dam. He travelled through Africa for five months after his recovery, worked for the WWF in the Kaokoveld in Namibia for three years, after which he worked for a safari company that conducted eco tours at the Skeleton Coast. He is currently a guide and area manager at Wilderness Safaris in Namibia. He lives in Damaraland in the northwest of Namibia.
