Maria Messina (Palermo, 14 marzo 1887 – Pistoia, 19 gennaio 1944) è stata una scrittrice italiana.
Nacque a Palermo, secondo alcune fonti a Alimena, in provincia di Palermo, da Gaetano, ispettore scolastico, e Gaetana Valenza Traina, discendente di una famiglia baronale di Prizzi. Cresciuta a Messina, trascorse un'infanzia isolata, con i genitori ed i fratelli. Durante l'adolescenza, viaggiò molto, per via dei continui spostamenti del padre, finché, nel 1911, la sua famiglia si stabilì a Napoli.

Grazia Maria Cosima Damiana Deledda was an Italian writer who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926 "for her idealistically inspired writings which with plastic clarity picture the life on her native island [i.e. Sardinia] and with depth and sympathy deal with human problems in general". She was the first Italian woman to receive the prize, and only the second woman in general after Selma Lagerlöf was awarded hers in 1909.

Kate Chopin was an American novelist and short-story writer best known for her startling 1899 novel, The Awakening. Born in St. Louis, she moved to New Orleans after marrying Oscar Chopin in 1870. Less than a decade later Oscar's cotton business fell on hard times and they moved to his family's plantation in the Natchitoches Parish of northwestern Louisiana.
