Cresciuta a Messina, trascorse un'infanzia isolata, con i genitori ed i fratelli. Durante l'adolescenza, viaggiò molto, per via dei continui spostamenti del padre, finché, nel 1911, la sua famiglia si stabilì a Napoli.
