Estreou como jornalista em 1957 no Jornal da Bahia. Estudou Direito na Universidade Federal da Baía e, enquanto estudava, participou na edição de jornais e revistas e numa colectânea de contos editada pela universidade em 1961.
Em 1963, Ribeiro escreveu o seu primeiro romance, Setembro não faz sentido, que só foi publicado cinco anos mais tarde. Fez o mestrado em Administração Pública e Ciência Política, em 1964, na Universidade da Califórnia do Sul, nos Estados Unidos da América, e, de 1965 a 1971, ingressa na Universidade Federal da Bahía como professor de Ciências Políticas.
