Alauddin Al-Azad

Alauddin Al-Azad (Bangla: আলাউদ্দিন আল আজাদ) was a modern Bangladeshi author, novelist, and poet. He was a student of Bangla literature in Dhaka University. He received his PhD from London University in 1970 for his work 'Iswar Gupter Jeebon o Kabita' (ঈশ্বরগুপ্তের জীবন ও কবিতা).

Azad was born in Dhaka. He was a professor of Bangla literature. Also he was a first secretary of Bangladesh High Commission in Moskow.

He was honored with Bangla Academy Award (1965), UNESCO Award (1965), National Film Award (1977) and Ekushey Padak (1986).

Anisul Hoque

Anisul Hoque (Bangla: আনিসুল হক) is a Bangladeshi screenwriter, novelist, dramatist and journalist. He graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, trained as a civil engineer.

His inspiration in journalism and writing started during his student life. After his graduation he joined to serve as a government employee but resigned only after 15 days. Instead he started working as a journalist. He attended the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in 2010. Currently, Hoque is working as an Associate Editor of a Bengali language daily, Prothom Alo.

His novel মা was translated in English as Freedom's Mother. It was published in Maithili too. He was honored with Bangla Academy Award in 2011.

Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay

Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay (Bangla: তারাশঙ্কর বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়) was born at his ancestral home at Labhpur village in Birbhum district, Bengal Province, British India (now West Bengal, India). He wrote 65 novels, 53 story-books, 12 plays, 4 essay-books, 4 autobiographies and 2 travel stories. For his novel Arogyaniketan, he received the Rabindra Puraskar in 1955 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956. In 1966, he received the Jnanpith Award for his novel গণদেবতা. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1962 and the Padma Bhushan in 1969.

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (Bangla: বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়) was an Indian Bangali author and one of the leading writers of modern Bangla literature. His best known work is the autobiographical novel, Pather Panchali: Song of the Road which was later adapted (along with Aparajito, the sequel) into the Apu Trilogy films, directed by Satyajit Ray.

The 1951 Rabindra Puraskar, the most prestigious literary award in the West Bengal state of India, was posthumously awarded to Bibhutibhushan for his novel ইছামতী.

Zahir Raihan

Zahir Raihan (Bangla: জহির রায়হান) was a Bangladeshi novelist, writer and filmmaker. He is perhaps best known for his documentary Stop Genocide made during the Bangladesh Liberation War.

He was an active worker of the Language Movement of 1952. The effect of Language Movement was so high on him that he made his legendary film Jibon Theke Neya based on it. In 1971 he joined in the Liberation War of Bangladesh and created documentary films on this great event.

He disappeared on January 30, 1972 while trying to locate his brother, the famous writer Shahidullah Kaiser, who was captured and killed by the Pakistan army. Evidences have been found that he was killed by some armed Bihari collaborators and disguised soldiers of Pakistan Army.

Satyajit Ray

Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজিৎ রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.

Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.

Ahmed Sofa

Ahmed Sofa (Bangla: আহমদ ছফা) was a well-known Bangladeshi philosopher, poet, novelist, writer, critic, translator. Sofa was renowned for his intellectual righteousness as well as his holistic approach to the understanding of social dynamics and international politics. His career as a writer began in the 1960s. He never married. On 28 July 2001, Ahmed Sofa died in a hospital in Dhaka. He was buried in Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard.

Abu Ishaque (Abu Bashar Mohammad Ishaque; Bangla: আবু ইসহাক) was a renowned modern Bangladeshi author and a famous novelist. Ishaque is often categorized with those who wrote the least and showed the best.
