Els Beerten werd geboren op 27 maart 1959 te Hasselt. Ze bracht haar kindertijd en jeugd door in Koersel.

Aan de KU Leuven studeerde ze Nederlands en Engels (1977-1981) en volgde tegelijkertijd een lerarenopleiding aan dezelfde universiteit. Daarna liep ze een aantal jaren dagschool aan de Toneelacademie van Maastricht.

Sinds 1985 onderwijst ze Nederlands, Engels en Creatief Schrijven aan het Sint-Jozefscollege van Aarschot.

Annet Schaap wilde altijd al tekenaar worden, of schrijver, of ontdekkingsreizigster.

Ze studeerde aan twee kunstacademies en een schrijversschool.

Sinds 1991 illustreerde ze bijna 200 kinderboeken en is in Nederland het meest bekend door haar tekeningen bij de succesvolle Hoe Overleef Ik-serie van Francine Oomen.
