Professor catedrático jubilado, doutorou-se em História Medieval pela Universidade de Lovaina (Bélgica), em 1966, quando era monge beneditino do Mosteiro de Singeverga, onde permaneceu até 1969. Pediu a redução ao estado laical em 1970, iniciando então uma carreira universitária.
