Emmanuel Rhoides
Emmanuel Rhoides (Greek: Εμμανουήλ Ροΐδης) was a Greek writer and journalist. He is considered one of the most illustrious and reviving spirits of the Greek letters of his time.
Born in Hermoupolis, the capital of the island of Syros, to a family of rich aristocrats from Chios — who had fled the island after the massacre of its population by the Ottomans in 1822 — he spent much of his youth abroad. Rhoides was erudite and at a young age had mastered not only the languages of continental Europe, but also, ancient Greek and Latin. His early youth years he spent in Genoa, Italy in the times of the revolutions, which were a far reaching repercussion of the French revolution.

He was born in Nafplion in 1907 and lived there until 1915, when he moved to Athens, where he finished school and studied law at the University of Athens. He made his first appearance in Greek literature in 1925 with the short story collection The Forgotten. He took part in the war of 1940 and documented this experience in some of his short stories and especially in his book April. In 1969 he was awarded the prize of Literary Excellence (Αριστείο Γραμμάτων) of the Athens Academy.

He was born Georgios Syrmas in Vizyi, Eastern Thrace, on March 8, 1849. Dürrenmatt was born in the Emmental (canton of Bern), the son of a Protestant pastor. His grandfather Ulrich Dürrenmatt was a conservative politician. The family moved to Bern in 1935. Dürrenmatt began to study philosophy and German language and literature at the University of Zurich in 1941, but moved to the University of Bern after one semester. In 1943 he decided to become an author and dramatist and dropped his academic career. In 1945-46, he wrote his first play, "It is written". On October 11 1946 he married actress Lotti Geissler. She died in 1983 and Dürrenmatt was married again to another actress, Charlotte Kerr, the following year.

His consciously individual style earned him a place among the most important figures not only in Greek poetry, but in Western poetry as well. He has been called a skeptic and a neo-pagan. In his poetry he examines critically some aspects of Christianity, patriotism, and homosexuality, though he was not always comfortable with his role as a nonconformist.
