Dea Anugrah

Dea Anugrah is a writer based in Jakarta, Indonesia. His most recent poetry collection Misa Arwah (2015) was longlisted in 2016 Khatulistiwa Literary Award. His collection of short stories Bakat Menggonggong (2016) was recognized by Rolling Stone Indonesia magazine as one of the best Indonesian books of 2016; it was also shortlisted in 2017 Khatulistiwa Literary Award. He regularly writes essays and journalistic reports for Tirto.id.

Nawal El Saadawi (Arabic: نوال السعداوي) was born in 1931, in a small village outside Cairo. Unusually, she and her brothers and sisters were educated together, and she graduated from the University of Cairo Medical School in 1955, specializing in psychiatry. Pramoedya Ananta Toer

Pramoedya Ananta Toer was an Indonesian author of novels, short stories, essays, polemics, and histories of his homeland and its people. A well-regarded writer in the West, Pramoedya's outspoken and often politically charged writings faced censorship in his native land during the pre-reformation era. For opposing the policies of both founding president Sukarno, as well as those of its successor, the New Order regime of Suharto, he faced extrajudicial punishment. During the many years in which he suffered imprisonment and house arrest, he became a cause célèbre for advocates of freedom of expression and human rights.

Eka Kurniawan

Eka Kurniawan was born in Tasikmalaya in 1975 and completed his studies in the Faculty of Philosophy at Gadjah Mada University. He has been described as the “brightest meteorite” in Indonesia’s new literary firmament, the author of two remarkable novels which have brought comparisons to Salman Rushdie, Gabriel García Márquez and Mark Twain; the English translations of these novels were both published in 2015—Man Tiger by Verso Books, and Beauty is a Wound by New Directions in North America and Text Publishing in Australia. Kurniawan has also written movie scripts, a graphic novel, essays on literature and two collections of short stories. He currently resides in Jakarta.

Seno Gumira Ajidarma

Seno Gumira Ajidarma is a writer, photographer, and also a film critic. He writes short stories, novel, even comic book.

He has won numerous national and regional awards as a short-story writer. Also a journalist, he serves as editor of the popular weekly illustrated magazine Jakarta-Jakarta. His piece in this issue is an excerpt from his novel "Jazz, Parfum dan Insiden", published by Yayasan Bentang Budaya in 1996.

Zaky Yamani

Zaky Yamani was born in Bandung City, July 27th 1978. He worked as a journalist and editor for the Pikiran Rakyat daily from 2002 until 2016. He graduated with an MA in Journalism from Ateneo de Manila University assisted by a scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism (2006 - 2008).
