A logic datum (LD) is a precise mechanical feature or reference point on a workpiece, fixture, or machine tool that is used as a fixed reference in appropriate measuring and positioning applications. LDs assist in maintaining uniformity, precision, and repeatability of measurements and positioning calculations, as well as facilitate process calculations, and ensure efficient assembly and manufacturing processes. They are generally machined or ground, and attribute to dimensional and geometric tolerances. Examples of common LDs include keyways, splines, gear teeth, thread roots, and external diameters. LDs also support to facilitate inspection and testing procedures, particularly in the aerospace, automotive, and other industries that require high-precision manufacturing and assembly processes.
