Wilhelm Schmid ist ein deutscher Philosoph mit dem Schwerpunkt auf dem Gebiet der Lebenskunstphilosophie.

Nach einer Kindheit und Jugend in bäuerlicher Umgebung (seine Eltern waren Landwirte und hatten sechs Kinder), einer Lehre als Schriftsetzer und vier Jahren bei der Bundeswehr holte Wilhelm Schmid am Augsburger Bayernkolleg 1980 das Abitur nach. Von 1977 bis 1980 war er in Augsburg Vorsitzender der dortigen Jungdemokraten, der damaligen Jugendorganisation der FDP. 1980 begann er ein Studium von Philosophie und Geschichte an der Freien Universität Berlin, der Pariser Sorbonne und der Universität Tübingen, das er 1991 mit einer Doktorarbeit über Michel Foucault abschloss.
