Marguerite Higgins was born in Hong Kong. Her father, Lawrence Higgins, an American working at a shipping company, moved the family back to the United States in 1923.
Higgins was educated at the University of California. In her first year she worked on the student newspaper, The Daily Californian. After Higgins graduated in 1941, she moved to Columbia University where she completed a masters degree in journalism.
In 1942 Higgins was hired by the New York Tribune. Higgins wanted to report the war in Europe, but it was not until 1944 that her editor agreed to send her to London. Dr Dave Walker trained at the University of Cape Town Medical School and specialised in anaesthesia at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. As a young registrar in training he was on duty during the world's first heart transplant operation on Louis Washkansky, which he describes in his book. He practiced anaesthesia in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, for 22 years before moving to the Middle East for six years. While in practice in Pietermaritzburg he developed a special interest in intensive care and was Administrative Head of Grey's Hospital ICU for a number of years. The Voice of the Martyrs is a non-profit, inter-denominational Christian organization dedicated to assisting the persecuted church worldwide. VOM was founded in 1967 by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, who was imprisoned 14 years in Communist Romania for his faith in Christ. His wife, Sabina, was imprisoned for three years. In the 1960s, Richard, Sabina, and their son, Mihai, were ransomed out of Romania and came to the United States. Through their travels, the Wurmbrands spread the message of the atrocities that Christians face in restricted nations, while establishing a network of offices dedicated to assisting the persecuted church. Henry Drummond FRSE FGS was a Scottish evangelist, biologist, writer and lecturer. He was a friend and contemporary of the Rev. John Watson (the Kailyard novelist Ian Maclaren) at Stirling High School and the University of Edinburgh.
