Theophan the Recluse

St. Theophan the Recluse, also known as Theophan Zatvornik or Theophanes the Recluse (Russian: Феофан Затворник), is a well-known saint in the Russian Orthodox Church. He was born George Vasilievich Govorov, in the village of Chernavsk. His father was a Russian Orthodox priest. He was educated in the seminaries at Livny, Orel and Kiev. In 1841 he was ordained, became a monk, and adopted the name Theophan. He later became the Bishop of Tambov.

He is especially well-known today through the many books he wrote concerning the spiritual life, especially on the subjects of the Christian life and the training of youth in the faith. Dom Lorenzo Scupoli was born in Otranto, Italy in 1530 and died in Naples in 1610. Nothing is known about his early life. At about the age of 40, he entered the Theatines and made his novitiate under St. Andrew Avellino. He was ordained in 1577. It is said that he met St. Francis de Sales in Padua between 1589 and 1591 and gave him a copy of The Spiritual Combat. For some reason that has never been revealed, he was laicized in 1585 and lived in retirement in Theatine houses until his death. Some sources say that his name was cleared at the end of his life, though he offered no defense of himself. John Maximovitch

St. John Maximovitch was born Michael Maximovtich on June 4, 1896 in the village of Adamovka in what was then southern Russia.

He attended Poltava Military School from 1907 to 1914 and then Kharkiv Imperial University from which he graduated with a law degree in 1918.

In 1921, he and his family fled Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution and civil war. They immigrated to Belgrade in what was then Yugoslavia where St. John enrolled in the University of Belgrade and earned a degree in theology.

In 1926 Metropolitan Anthony tonsured him a monk and then ordained him hierodeacon. He took the monastic name John after Saint John Maximovitch of Tobolsk who is his distant relative. He was elevated again to hieromonk that same year.
