  Fred Anderson is an American historian specializing in early North American history, particularly the colonial and revolutionary periods. He earned his B.A. from Colorado State University and his Ph.D. from Harvard, later teaching at both institutions. Now Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado Boulder, he has held fellowships from the NEH, Guggenheim Foundation, and others.   John Kennedy Toole was an American novelist from New Orleans, Louisiana, whose posthumously published novel, A Confederacy of Dunces, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981; he also wrote The Neon Bible. During the Second World War he was forced to serve in a Hungarian labour battalion for Jews.
