N.P. van Wyk Louw

Nicolaas Petrus van Wyk Louw was born at Sutherland on June 11th 1906. He was second in line of four brothers, of which the youngest was W.E.G. Louw, the poet. Their parents Von Moltke and Poppie Louw with their family moved to Cape Town in 1920. The young Van Wyk studied at Cape Town University and received a MA degree in German, later he became lecturer at this university. In 1948 he received an honours degree from Utrecht University for his critique and creative works. In 1949 he became a Professor of Afrikaans at the University of Amsterdam, he held this post until 1958. After that he became Head of Department Afrikaans-Dutch at the University of Witwatersrand.

Antjie Krog

Krog grew up on a farm, attending primary and secondary school in Kroonstad. In 1973 she earned a BA (Hons) degree in English from the University of the Orange Free State, and an MA in Afrikaans from the University of Pretoria in 1976. With a teaching diploma from the University of South Africa (UNISA) she would lecture at a segregated teacher’s training college for black South Africans.

Eleanor Baker

Although Baker initially studied music, she obtained her M.A. in Afrikaans (cum laude) in 1968 at the University of Pretoria. In Johannesburg she worked as a school teacher and got married to Walter Baker in 1969. Three years later her debut Wêreld sonder einde appeared, albeit that Weerkaatsings (Reflections) established her status as an important (though unfortunately often undervalued) Afrikaans author who penned 56 books in the end. Since her husband was in the diplomatic service, the couple moved from Teheran to Den Haag and from there to Montreal and Brussels before returning to South Africa to retire. Baker died of cancer at the age of 57.

She sometimes used the pseudonyms Christine le Roux and Alex Muller.

Ronelda S. Kamfer

Ronelda Kamfer is an Afrikaans-speaking South African poet.

She grew up with her grandparents, farm workers in Grabouw, in a region known for its orchards and vineyards, located a good sixty kilometers from Cape Town and its townships. She then returned to her parents, who, when she was 13, settled in Eersterivier, a suburb which had many social problems - poverty, violence, drugs, gang warfare.
