Ellen Gardner has always loved reading and writing. Memoirs, historical fiction, and creative non-fiction are her favorite genres, along with children's books. Retired, she's now most often seen boarding an airplane or aiming a camera.

I am the published author of 12 books, all in the romance genre; everything from time travel, to historical, to contemporary. My newest release, "Checkmate" is the start of my break from the romance genre. It's still classified as a romantic thriller, but truthfully it's more thriller than romance. I'm not saying I won't ever write another romance, especially time travel. I'd have too many upset readers if I didn't. But, for now, I just needed try something new. In fact, my current manuscript, titled "We The People" takes me completely out of the romance genre. But more about that later.

I grew up in a rural county in East Tennessee during the 1940s and 1950s. This county had very little industry–a few small coal mines and sawmills, so most people made their living as farmers or traveled out of the county to find jobs. Many families lived on small tracts of land, often on hillsides or in hollows, where they eked out a living from the soil–enough to survive. At that time, my county was among the poorest counties in all of Appalachia.
My family had our little fifteen-acre plot, about a third of which was not tillable. We kept cows to provide milk and butter and raised chickens, hogs, rabbits, and goats, and sometimes horses. During the summer we raised a big garden and canned and preserved f -

I’ve been lucky. Years ago, I wanted to live on a farm, and my husband said “Let’s do it.” When personal computers were introduced, I wanted to know about them and have one, and lucky me, the school where I taught offered a course in Basic. When we bought our first computer, I discovered the writer’s best friend--word processing. (Before that, I could not write without crossing out most of a typewritten or handwritten page, and progress seemed impossible.) When I wanted to shift from teaching to writing, the first Macintosh computers came out, and I was lucky enough to offer, along with technical and business writing, the first “desktop publishing” in my county. And when finally I had the leisure to give a lot of time to a novel, my husband

Barbara Martinez
Barbara Martinez, author of A Disloyal Element, is a first-time novelist who turned her interest in American history, and the Civil War in particular, to that time period for her first historical fiction novel. Several years spent volunteering at the local museum and living in a 100-year-old house made her pause to think of those people from another time and put herself "literarily" in their shoes. The interest must run in the family. Her husband publishes a local historical magazine. So far, their four cats aren't impressed.

Maria Elena Sandovici
Maria Elena Sandovici has been loitering around Galveston Island for twenty years now. In this time, she's befriended some very interesting people, learned many Island stories, and made up many more. Have you heard about the horses, for example? If you visit the historic Leage Kempner House, the Broadway mansion that inspired Storms of Malhado, you might just hear their hoofbeats going up the stairs. Or not. Island lore, fiction, and history blend seemslessly in a universe scented with sea salt, jasmine, and perhaps the faintest whiff of manure.

James T. Hogg
James T. Hogg is the pseudonym of a prominent New York City attorney. Faythe of North Hinkapee is his first novel, writing as James T. Hogg. The novel is based on a story he told many times to his now-grown children. The goal—then and now—was to create a story that the reader simply cannot put down, even when it is midnight and the reader has to get up to go to work the next morning. That has always been his simple goal—to write a page-turner, so that the reader can have a great time with an enjoyable read.

Freddie Owens
I was born in Kentucky but grew up around Detroit. I would sometimes spend a week or two, once I spent six weeks, in Kentucky, staying with cousins or with my grandparents. And yes, it was an entirely different world for me, providing some of the best and worst times of my growing up years. I had a great time on a dairy farm with several of my cousins, milking cows, hoeing tobacco, running over the hills and hollers and up and down a creek that surrounded the big farm. I remember too, periods of abject boredom, sitting around my grandparent's place with nothing to do but wander about the red clay yard or kill flies on my grandmother's screened in back porch.
