Karen Lynn Nolan
Karen Lynn Nolan is an award-winning writer of Appalachian fiction, mystery/suspense, and memoir. Her years in the eastern Kentucky mountains instilled a love of storytelling, mystery, humor, stubbornness, and deep faith.
Karen's degree in music and theater drove her to leave her beloved mountains and move to New York City to study voice and acting and to perform. Her experiences ranged from serving as music director of Trinity Baptist Church to performing on-stage at Carnegie Hall.
Then life took her on more adventures through several eastern states until she settled in Atlanta and devoted herself to her first love, writing.

I grew up in a rural county in East Tennessee during the 1940s and 1950s. This county had very little industry–a few small coal mines and sawmills, so most people made their living as farmers or traveled out of the county to find jobs. Many families lived on small tracts of land, often on hillsides or in hollows, where they eked out a living from the soil–enough to survive. At that time, my county was among the poorest counties in all of Appalachia.
My family had our little fifteen-acre plot, about a third of which was not tillable. We kept cows to provide milk and butter and raised chickens, hogs, rabbits, and goats, and sometimes horses. During the summer we raised a big garden and canned and preserved f -

Retired, she's now most often seen boarding an airplane or aiming a camera.
Ellen's first book, Veda, was written after her father's diaries annoyed her so much she was compelled to tell her mother's side of the story. Her latest novel, Side-swiped, is a fu -

Sharon Mierke
"I'm not sure when someone decides to become a writer. I was once asked why I started and I said, 'I was tired of reading so decided to start writing!' Some dream about it but never do it and others are foolish enough to try. I have always loved Daphne DuMaurier's quote: 'Writers should be read and not seen or heard.' I loved the thought of writing but having anonymity at the same time. I doubt that can be achieved in today's world. I write for the pleasure of writing and I share it because I hope others will find joy in reading it."
