Bok was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Stanford University (B.A., 1951), Harvard Law School (J.D., 1954), and George Washington University (A.M., 1958). Stewart was the third child of the novelist and Oxford academic J. I. M. Stewart (1906-1994) and Margaret Hardwick (1905-1979). Angus was born in Adelaide in 1936.
