Prvý predseda Slovenskej národnej rady, slovenský spisovateľ, novinár, politik a organizátor kultúrneho života slovenského národného hnutia, evanjelický kňaz a vedúca osobnosť slovenského povstania 1848 – 1849. Pôvodne bol stúpenec Jána Kollára, neskôr Ľudovíta Štúra.

Pochádzal zo sedliackej rodiny v Hornom Záturčí, kde jeho otec bol evanjelickým kňazom a matka zemankou. Študoval v Záturčí, Necpaloch, Gemeri, neskôr v Levoči a od roku 1839 v Bratislave. O niekoľko rokov neskôr študoval i v nemeckom Halle. Pôsobil ako vychovávateľ a od roku 1846 pôsobil (vďaka Štúrovej intervencii) ako učiteľ filozofie a rektor na gymnáziu v Modre. Od roku 1858 (do 1869) bol riaditeľom na gymnáziu v Sliezskom Tešíne, kde sa stretával s M. M. Hodžom. Po odchode do penzie sa presťahoval do Martina, a stal sa redaktorom mesačníka Orol. Pochovaný je na Národnom cintoríne v Martine.

Narodil sa ako druhé zo štyroch detí v rodine krajčíra a osvetového pracovníka. Študoval na gymnáziu v Rožňave a Liptovskom Mikuláši, neskôr na Vyššej priemyselnej škole v Bratislave. Štúdium ukončil v roku 1934 na Českom vysokom učení technickom v Prahe. Po návrate do Bratislavy pôsobil ako vysokoškolský pedagóg. Neskôr pracoval ako redaktor Rádiožurnálu v Československom rozhlase v Bratislave, posledných päť rokov ako oblastný riaditeľ pre Slovensko. Zomrel v Bratislave na rakovinový nádor, pochovaný je v Hybiach.

Ivana Gibová vyštudovala odbor slovenský jazyk a literatúra na FF PU. Debutovala zbierkou poviedok Usadenina (2013), ktorá ako rukopis vyhrala v súťaži Debut 2011 a po vydaní zvíťazila v ankete Debut roka.
