Ilon Wikland (Maire-Ilon Pääbo)

Her father, Max Pääbo was a civil engineer and her mother, Vida Pääbo-Juse was a painter and textile artist who had graduated from the Pallas Art School in Tartu.

Ilon spent her childhood in Haapsalu. "I have often thought that the best thing that happened to me was going to live with my grandmother and grandfather in Haapsalu. I was like their own child. They cared for me and loved me a lot," explains Wikland many decades later.

Ilon started school in Tallinn and then from 1939–1944 she attended the 1st Primary School in Haapsalu. In late September 1944, Ilon’s grandmother took her to the ship that was to take her, along with a school friend and her family, to Sweden. The war was drawing to an end and Russian

Henryk Sienkiewicz

Henryk Adam Aleksander Pius Sienkiewicz (also known as "Litwos"; May 5, 1846–November 15, 1916) was a Polish journalist and Nobel Prize-winning novelist. Tove Jansson

Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.

Bruno Schulz

Sven Nordqvist

Sven Nordqvist (born 30 April 1946) is a Swedish writer and illustrator of children's books. He is best known for his series Pettson and Findus, about an old farmer, Pettson, and his talented cat, Findus.

Nordqvist was born in Helsingborg and grew up in Halmstad, Sweden. He originally wanted to be an illustrator but was rejected by several art schools. Instead he studied architecture at Lund Institute of Technology, and worked for a time there as a lecturer in architecture. At the same time he continued to look for work as an illustrator working on advertisements, posters and picture books. In 1983 he won first prize in a children's book competition and since then has worked exclusively as an author and illustrator of children's books.

Jojo Moyes

Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, better known by his pen name E. T. A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann), was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror, a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist.
