Nació en la Ciudad de México, el 13 de julio de 1940; muere en Bloomington, Indiana, EU, el 26 de junio de 2015. Ensayista y narrador.

Estudió Leyes, Filosofía y Letras en la UNAM. Fue asesor editorial de la SEP; fundador de la colección SEPSetentas, el calendario Ramón López Velarde y La Semana de Bellas Artes; profesor en la FCPyS de la UNAM y la University of New Mexico; jefe del Departamento de Ciencias de la Comunicación de la UNAM; conductor y director de programas de televisión; director literario de la editorial Grijalbo; director de literatura del INBA; jefe de redacción de Visión; fundador y director de Eclipse y Siete; editor de Caso Clínico; director artístico de la Revista de Bellas Artes; asesor de Últimas Noticias.
