Gunnar Gunnarsson

Gunnar Gunnarsson is one of Iceland's most esteemed writers. From a poor peasant background, Gunnar moved to Denmark in 1907 to get an education. He wrote mainly in Danish throughout his career, in order to reach a wider audience.
In 1955, he was considered for the Nobel Prize, the year in which it was awarded to his fellow countryman, Halldór Laxness.

Fumiko Hayashi

Fumiko Hayashi (林芙美子), December 31, 1903 or 1904 (Japanese sources disagree on the birth year) - June 28, 1951) was a Japanese novelist and poet.

When Hayashi was seven, her mother ran away with a manager of her common-law husband's store, and afterwards the three worked in Kyūshū as itinerant merchants. After graduating from high school in 1922, Hayashi moved to Tokyo with a lover and lived with several men until settling into marriage with the painter Rokubin Tezuka (手塚緑敏?) in 1926.

Many of her works revolve around themes of free spirited women and troubled relationships. One of her best-known works is Hōrōki (translated into English as "Vagabond's Song" or "Vagabond's Diary") (放浪記, 1927), which was adapted into the anime Wandering Days.

Bergsveinn Birgisson

Bergsveinn has a PhD in Nordic Studies from the University of Bergen. He has published two volumes of poetry, Íslendingurinn (The Icelander) and Innrás liljanna (The Invasion of the Lilies), and four novels, Landslag er aldrei asnalegt (Landscape is Never Stupid), Handbók um hugarfar kúa (A Handbook on the Attitude of Cows), Svar við bréfi Helgu (Answer to Letters from Helga), and Den Svarte Vikingen (The Black Viking) which is written in Norwegian.
He has also helped with the Norwegian translation of the Icelandic medieval saga Flateyarbók

Ólafur Gunnarsson

Ólafur Gunnarsson was born in Reykjavík on July 18, 1948. He completed a commercial diploma from The Commercial College of Iceland in 1968. Ólafur worked for the merchant Ásbjörn Ólafsson hf. from 1965-1971 and was a driver with the Reykjavík medical emergency services from 1972-1978. Ólafur has worked as a writer since 1974.

Poetry by Ólafur Gunnarsson had appeared in newspapers and magazines before his first novel, Milljón-prósent menn (Million-Percent Men), was published in 1978. Einar Már Guðmundsson received a B.A. in Comparative Literature and History from the University of Iceland in 1979, after which he moved to Copenhagen to do graduate work in Comparative Literature at the University of Copenhagen.

Ben Waggoner

I've been studying Old Norse (close to modern Icelandic) in my copious spare time since about 2006. Now I translate, study, annotate, and periodically publish Old Norse sagas (longish prose narratives that come in a great many "genres"). Why? It's fun if you like that sort of thing, and someone has to do it. . . My focus has been on the fornaldarsögur or "sagas of olden time" -- legendary narratives set in Scandinavia, some of which transmit very old legendary material.

Gro Dahle

Gro Dahle (born 15 May 1962) is a Norwegian poet and writer.

She was born in Oslo, and is a daughter of Øystein Dahle. She made her literary début in 1987 with Audiens (Audience), a collection of poetry. Since then Dahle has written over 30 books in different genres, among them a series of picture books for children in collaboration with her husband, Norwegian illustrator Svein Nyhus.

Gro Dahle has received several national awards for her work. In 1999 she was the official festival poet at the Bergen International Festival. Fred Magdoff

Fred Magdoff is Emeritus Professor of Soils in the Department of Plant and Soil Science at the University of Vermont. He received his degrees from Oberlin College (BA) and from Cornell University (MS and PhD). Magdoff was Plant and Soil Science Department Chair for 8 years (1985-1993), a member of the National Small Farm Commission (1997-1999, USDA), and is the Coordinator in the 12-state Northeast Region for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.
